Our story

It Began With a Maestro

When the celebrated conductor Zubin Mehta arrived in Munich in 1998 as General Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera, one thing was missing from his new life in Bavaria: cricket.

The Indien Institut e.V. took up the idea, and on 15 August 2002 — India's Independence Day — the very first ID Cup was played in Munich's famous Englischer Garten.

What began as a friendly match among enthusiasts has grown into a Munich institution, jointly carried by the Indien Institut e.V., Munich International Cricketers e.V. and Sportverein Lohhof e.V., in conjunction with the Consulate General of India in Munich — regularly welcoming well over 200 guests.

“Cricket, culture and community — one day each year, Munich plays in tricolor.”
