ABOUT US

The Full Story

It all began with a conversation between Maestro Zubin Mehta and Frau Gedon, the then president of Indien Institut in Munich. Zubin Mehta is not only a great musician, but - what perhaps not everyone knows - also a great cricket fan.

Cricket is to us Indians what soccer is to Germany and Europe: our passion. When Zubin Mehta took up his position as General Music Director in Munich in 1998, he was indeed missing his favorite sport. Thus, the Indien Institut organized the first 1st ID Cup on 15 August 2002, in Munich’s famous Englishergarten. This event was not only unifying in terms of the sporting idea, but, fittingly, August 15 is India's Independence Day and also a holiday in Bavaria. What certainly played into our hands was that the then still young Indian community in Munich was growing rapidly, not least due to the influx of IT specialists and engineers. The interest was great.

This first more or less spontaneous "Cup" has since developed into a firm tradition. The IDCup event is probably the only cricket match which attracts large crowds, we have had in access of 200 people attending in the past. To keep our german guests engaged and informed, a running commentary is provided during the match. This year we are therefore celebrating both the 75th anniversary of Indian independence and our 20th cricket match in the Englischergarten.

We are honoured and pleased that the Minister President of Bavaria Dr. Marcus Söder MdL has personally accepted to be the patron of this special event in recognition of the close bond between Bavaria and India.

We would like to express our sincere thanks for the continued support and commitment of the Bavarian State Government and the Consulate General of India in Munich in staging this event. Together with Indien Institut e.V., Munich International Cricketer e.V. has organized this event since its inception. We are pleased that SVL, Sports Verein Lohof, will continue with this tradition.
